SWOT Analysis of Liverpool
One of the major clubs of the English Premier League that has lost its charm in recent years is Liverpool. The only English Club to have won the most number of European Glory which includes five UEFA Champions League Trophies, three UEFA Super Cups and three UEFA Cups has definitely lost its charm in recent years.
The Reds have won the Premier League Title 18 times before their rivals Manchester United broke their record and made it 20. Liverpool have not gotten a chance to grace their trophy cabinet with the Premier League Title since 1990 and the fans are keeping their fingers crossed and have a high deal of expectation from their manager for the upcoming season.
With Liverpool strengthening their squad with four new names on their team sheet, lets have a look at the how the Reds prepare for the 2013-14 season in terms of their SWOT Analysis.
Manager: Brendan Rodgers
Goalkeepers: Brad Jones, Simon Mignolet.
Defenders: Kolo Toure, Daniel Agger, Sebastian Coates, Martin Skrtel, Jose Enrique, Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly, Andre Wisdom.
Midfielders: Jay Spearing, Lucas, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Joe Allen, Coutinho.
Wingers: Stewart Downing, Luis Alberto, Oussama Assaidi, Raheem Sterling.
Strikers: Luis Suarez, Iago Aspas, Daniel Sturridge, Fabio Borini.
Liverpool’s strengths start right from the back, the goalkeeper of the team. By performing brilliantly in the pre season, both the keepers have shown that they can be looked upon during the rest of the season. Liverpool has won all five Pre Season Matches and that too with all five clean sheets in the bag. A lot of expectation lies with the two keepers of the team ahead of a challenging season.
The team’s midfield runs like a well oiled machine under the experienced command functions of Steven Gerrard. The combination of defending and attacking maneuvers from time to time make the team click in difficult times and against tough opponents. Gerrard has been one of the most long lasting player’s in the team and has proved to be fit at both Defensive and Attacking Midfield for the team. His orchestrating of attacks and vision with and without the ball has been proved fruitful for the team from time to time.
The club’s Strikers are the ones who actually move along the pitch with real menace with their passing and movement. Turning every chance into an opportunity and trying to make every strike ending up at the back of the net is what makes the Strike Force really difficult to manage for the opponents.
Liverpool’s weakness lies with the back four, who though have proved to be functioning pretty well in the Pre Season, tend to fall apart in big games. With Jamie Carragher making his final decision by hanging his boots, the club’s new defence line looks a little dicey. Even though the Pre Season has gone very well till now and has got that extra boost with new signing Kolo Toure coming in, things still can go either way.
Another area where club boss Brendan Rodgers should give a closer look is maybe the Wing Play of the team. Over the course of time Liverpool’s widening of the game from the flanks might have gotten disturbed a number of times and a possibility of a new strategy or formation might be required by the boss.
With four new signings coming in for the club, the team has a lot of potential prospects to look at who can prove to be very useful for the club at their positions.
While Toure takes the empty Central Defensive position of Carragher for the team, Mignolet has proved to be a fine Keeper between the bars during the Pre Season. Alberto and Aspas can both help bolster Liverpool’s attack by playing active role at the Wing and Strike Position respectively.
With the departure of Pepe Reina on loan to Napoli, Carragher’s retirement and Andy Carrol’s move to West Ham the team has in a way became open to a lot of changes. Changes that can turn out to be in Liverpool’s favour or might just land in their opponent’s.
Another looming threat that gets the fans and the club worrried is the Transfer Saga of Luis Suarez. Even though the club has Daniel Sturridge, who has proved to be a potential candidate for The Reds and has performed whenever the club had him on the pitch, or Iago Aspos who can prove his valour over the course of time, the club still hopes Luis Suarez stays and helps Liverpool with a great season.
Lets hope that club manager, Brendan Rodgers keeps up the same form of his team in the entire Premier League Season as he is keeping it in the Pre Season for the club.
